Cristy is a development professional from New York who has worked in leadership development for the past ten years. She is the founder of the mentorship organization “Care to Lead”, a leadership program for young women that connects them to women of color mentors who can support them in seeing through their goals. Her identity and experience as a big sister has led her to creating a constantly giving circle of love and growth for the women in her community. In this episode we discuss what leadership looks like, what it means to be a role model, and how she defines success for herself.

During this episode, we also discuss:

  • Listening to young people, providing a space for them to feel that they are cared about and have agency to take action for themselves

  • The importance of reflection in leadership. In order to be a good leader it is important to reflect on your actions, and on the decisions you have made and to take an honest look at whether that has helped you in your leadership or helped you grow your life

  • Serving others through “the overflow”, when you have a lot of love in your life you can give it back to others who need it without taking from your own energy and serving from an empty cup.

  • Leadership looks different to everyone, and so it is important to tailor it to your own personality and what matters to you.

  • Self-care as an important way to serve others to the best of your ability, and the things she does to take care of herself and love herself.
